Brazil has four main groups of people. They are the Native Indians,
Portuguese Colonists, African Slaves, and immigrants of Spain and Italy.
In Brazil they are 55% European descent including Germans, Italians, Poles,
Portuguese and Spaniards. Also they are 6% African descent, and 38% mixed European and
African descent. Also they are only 1% American Indians and others. And that there’s 75%
Roman Catholic and about 15% Protestant.
Brazil ranks 5th largest nation in population. Did you know that 1/2 of the people in South America
live in Brazil? Also 8% of Brazil’s people live in the Amazon Region in northwestern and North-Central
Brazil. Most of the poor live in slums. Slums are made of cardboard, metal or wood. Thirty
percent of people live in the slums. In the slums, there is little running water and bad sewers. Many of
the people don’t eat well and are sick. The crime rate is high when you live in the slums.
In the country, people who live there also work on their farms
or fish. They earn very little and can barely feed their families. The families
don’t eat well and live poorly. Families live in houses out of stone and clay
tiles. In the Amazon area, houses are made of wood and plants. The roofs are
made of palm leaves. Hammocks are used for people to sleep in.
Brazil does have some well off people. They will only earn about
half of their money. Only government people or owners of their ranches, or
businesses live well.
Brazil also has a middle class. They are the people between rich
and poor. Some of these people are teachers, nurses, and business people. They
are about half of the people that work.
In Brazil, Portuguese is the official and most widely spoken
language. The least common languages spoken in Brazil are Spanish, German,
Italian, Japanese, English, and a large number of Minor Amerindian languages.
