In the early years, Brazil’s Indians are settlers of those early migrants who gathered to hunt,
fish, and gather wild plants. These Indians lived in a cave named the Monte Alegre in the
Amazon area. The Indians most favored root is the manioc, or the cassava and also the most
favored root today.
In the 1400s, the Treaty of Tordesillas separated the Spaniards and the Portuguese. The Spaniards
and the Portuguese sailed to China and India to trade for spices, silk, pearls, and other goods.
In the 1500s, a Portuguese explorer Pedro Alvarez Cabral landed in Brazil and claimed it for
Portugal. Also in the 1500s a Spaniard named Vicente Yanez Pinzon sailed to the northern coast
which is now Brazil.
The only thing that happened that was important in the 1600s is that GOLD was discovered in
Minas Gerais.
In the 1700s, Rio de Janiero became the capital of Brazil. Then Spain and Portugal signed the
Treaty of San Ildefonso which made Brazil’s borders today. After that, Tiradentes lead to the first
major fight against Portugal’s rule.
In the 1800s, the Portuguese’s royal family leaves for Brazil right after France invades
Portugal. Then Pedro declares himself the Emperor of Brazil. In 1888, slavery had ended. Brazil became a republic in 1889.
In the 1900’s, a fight puts Getulio Vargas in power. Brasilia becomes the capital of Brazil in 1960.
A military government starts in 1964. In 1985, free elections to mark Brazilian government
to return, then in 1988, a new constitution was used in Brazil.
In the 2000’s a new century, Brazil wins their fifth World Cup and a year later, Luiz Inacio Lula da Silva becomes the first working class President for Brazil.
